PIGMENT IN NATURAL HAIR
There are two types of melanin protein found in the hair:
Eumelanin: is responsible for hair shades from black to brown, and
Phaeomelanin: is responsible for red and yellow-ish colors.
Absence of pigment, produces white or gray hair.
HAIR STRUCTURE:
Human hair contains approximately 85 percent protein mainly in the form of keratin and the remaining is water and dead cells. Each strand of hair is made up of 3 layers:-
Cuticle: The cuticle is a tightly formed structure made of shingle-like overlapping scales. The pigments, which are protein granules, are stored in the cortex of the hair beneath the scaly cuticle layer.
Cortex: The cortex makes up the majority of the hair shaft. The pigments, which are protein granules, are stored in the cortex of the hair beneath the scaly cuticle layer.
Medulla: The innermost layer of a hair strand. It is both the cortex and the medulla that holds the hair’s pigment, giving it its color.
TYPES OF HAIR COLOR
Temporary hair color: They usually have vibrant shades or colors such as orange, red, pink, or blue, that are difficult to achieve with semi-permanent and permanent hair colors. These dyes do not penetrate into cortex or medulla and can be easily removed with shampoo
Semi permanent hair color: These dyes give stronger & more permanent coloration to hair but gets removed after 6-8 shampooings. They do not contain ammonia.
Permanent hair color: Permanent hair-coloring products consist of two components that are packaged separately and mixed together immediately before application. All “permanent” hair color products and lighteners contain both a developer, or oxidizing agent, and an alkalizing ingredient as part of their ammonia or an ammonia substitute. The chemicals help raise the cuticle of the hair fiber so the tint can penetrate, and allow settling of tints within the hair fibre.
Natural permanent dye: Henna
ALL NATURAL HERBAL HAIR DYE (2 STEPS)
INGREDIENT INFORMATION
HENNA : Henna is a natural dye that has the ability to darken light or grey colored hair for a long time. It doesn’t not fade easily and lasts more than a month usually. It helps reduce premature greying of hair, because it’s loaded with tannins, a plant compound found in teas that contributes to their rich colouring. Henna gives different shades depending upon the base color of hair. If hair is gray or white, henna hair dye will result in reddish-orange color. For black or dark brown hair, it will give a slightly different shade but won’t make much difference. Natural henna hair color strengthens the hair, prevents them from falling, breaking, or thinning, resulting in healthier-looking hair. Regular use of henna results in accelerated hair growth.
COFFEE: Coffee is dark in color, so it acts as a stain on the hair. In combination with henna it helps in hiding gray strands if you have brown or black hair. For the best results, strong coffee must be used. It can tame gray hair and darken brown tresses. The coffee hair dye works differently on different shades of hair. While it can play up brown and light-colored hair, the color may not pop on darker hair shades. How well the coffee colors your hair will depend on the state of your hair. If you have thick hair, the color may not catch easily as this hair type lacks the essential porosity to absorb the dye. On the other hand, if your hair is thin, it is easier to absorb the color from the coffee dye.The stronger the brew, the better the hair color.

Paraphenylenediamine (PPD/PPDA): Paraphenylenediamine is a chemical substance that is widely used as coloring ingredient because it is a permanent dye that gives a natural look, and the dyed hair can also be shampooed without losing its colour.
