Seeing grey roots again does not necessarily mean that permanent hair colour has faded. Often, what you are seeing is newly grown hair that was never coloured in the first place.
This distinction is one of the simplest ways to avoid misjudging how well a permanent colour has performed.
Permanent colour acts on existing hair
A hair dye can colour the strand that is already outside the scalp. It cannot colour future hair before that hair grows.
So if your existing coloured hair remains dark but a pale or white line begins appearing close to the scalp, the new grey is not necessarily colour that has washed out. It can simply be fresh growth.
Hair growth varies from person to person, which means the time before visible roots become noticeable also varies.
Fading and regrowth are different
When evaluating the result, look at the location of the grey.
If the previously coloured lengths are becoming lighter, the colour itself is fading.
If the lengths remain coloured while white hair is appearing only at the root, the permanent colour can still be present exactly where it was applied. The visible grey belongs to hair that emerged afterwards.
This is why “How long until I see grey again?” is not a complete measure of permanence.
Why permanent colouring becomes a root-touch-up process
Once the existing length has been permanently coloured, repeated full-length colouring is not necessarily required simply because the roots have grown.
The new growth is the part that needs attention. Repeatedly exposing the entire length to chemical colour can contribute to dryness, brittleness and frizz.
That is one practical advantage of distinguishing regrowth from fading: it helps you understand which part of the hair actually needs colouring. The key question when grey reappears is therefore: has colour disappeared from the hair that was previously dyed, or is new white hair emerging from the scalp? Permanent colour can remain in the existing strand while new grey growth continues normally.
