
Liquid Castile soap can be surprisingly versatile: the same broad family of oil-based soaps can be adapted for personal cleansing or household cleaning, yet different oils produce very different lather, thickness and cleansing character.
Understanding those differences is more useful than memorizing a single recipe.
What Is Liquid Castile Soap?
Liquid Castile soap is an oil-based liquid soap. Unlike the surfactant-based hand washes, body washes and face washes commonly found in the market, the type of Castile soap I teach begins with oils or butters and uses potassium hydroxide to convert those fatty materials into soap through saponification.
The result is not simply “oil mixed with water.” The oils are transformed into soap. The intermediate soap is a soft or paste-like base that can later become a clear liquid cleanser. This is one reason it is useful to think of Castile soap as a versatile cleansing base rather than as one fixed finished product.
Traditionally, Castile soap was associated with olive oil. Today, the term is also used for liquid soaps made with other oils or combinations of oils. That matters because the choice of oil changes the character of the finished cleanser: its lather, thickness, cleansing feel and suitability for different applications can all change.
Why Can the Same Type of Soap Be Used in So Many Ways?
One of the most interesting things about liquid Castile soap is that the underlying soap can serve very different purposes. It can be used in products such as face wash, body wash, hand wash, baby wash, dishwashing liquid, laundry products, floor cleaners, glass cleaners, kitchen cleaners and other household cleaning products.
That does not mean that every Castile soap base is equally appropriate for every job.
The important principle is to match the cleansing character of the oil to the job. A cleanser intended for skin does not necessarily need the same cleansing power as one intended for greasy dishes, clothes or floors.
This distinction is more useful than assuming that “more cleansing” is automatically better. Our skin is washed regularly and does not usually need the same degreasing action as household surfaces or utensils. For heavier household cleaning, stronger cleansing becomes more useful.

The Oil Changes the Personality of the Soap
If you are trying to understand Castile soap, focus first on the oils.
Different oils behave differently after they are converted into soap. Three particularly useful properties to consider are:
- cleansing
- lather
- thickness
Olive oil
Olive oil is the classic example of a mild Castile soap oil. I use it when discussing face wash, body wash, hand wash and baby wash.
It also has an important practical advantage: an olive-oil liquid soap can develop a comparatively thick texture. Its lather is milder than coconut oil, but it can still produce a useful lather.
Coconut oil
Coconut oil sits at the other end of the comparison. It gives very high cleansing and very high lather, but a coconut-oil liquid soap is naturally much thinner.
This is why I particularly associate it with applications such as dishwashing, laundry, floor cleaning, glass cleaning, kitchen cleaning and other jobs where stronger cleansing is wanted.

Castor oil
Castor oil is different again. It is valued for nourishment, but on its own it does not give the kind of bubbling lather many people expect. A castor-oil soap can therefore be considered when a non-foaming face cleanser is desired.
Mixed-oil soaps
Mixed-oil soaps sit between these extremes.
Combining oils can balance the qualities of the finished soap rather than maximizing only one property. This can make sense for personal-cleansing products where you want useful lather and a pleasant texture without designing solely for maximum degreasing.
Lather and Thickness Are Not the Same Thing
A common mistake is to assume that a thick cleanser must be a powerful cleanser, or that a thin cleanser will not lather well.
Liquid Castile soap is a very good demonstration of why those assumptions are unreliable.
Coconut-oil soap can look almost watery and still create a tremendous amount of lather. Olive-oil soap can become dramatically thicker even though its lather is milder.
In other words, visual viscosity is not a direct measure of cleansing performance.
Thickness is largely an aesthetic and usability choice in the way I teach these soaps. It can make a body wash or face wash feel more familiar to a consumer, but thickness itself is not what performs the cleansing.
Different soap bases also respond differently to thickening. A thickening approach that works beautifully for one oil system may be ineffective in another.

What Does Glycerin Do in Liquid Castile Soap?
Glycerin plays an important role in these soaps. One of the most useful consumer-facing observations is what happens when it is present in diluted soap.
I describe glycerin as more moisturizing than water and also as contributing more thickness.
This becomes especially relevant with coconut-oil soap. Coconut oil gives excellent lather and cleansing, but when the intention is to use that soap on the body, glycerin helps produce a more moisturizing feel.
At the same time, there is a balance to maintain: the more a soap is diluted, whether with water or glycerin, the more its lather can be reduced.
There is also a product-satisfaction issue. A cleanser may be nourishing, but many users still expect visible lather. A technically acceptable cleanser that does not give the sensory experience a person expects may not feel satisfying to use.

How Does Liquid Castile Soap Feel on Different Skin Types?
I do not normally divide every soap into separate “oily skin,” “normal skin” and “dry skin” categories. Soap is primarily there to cleanse.
The general Castile soaps discussed here can be used across skin types, with glycerin helping the overall feel.
For very dry skin, butter-containing soap is a more moisturizing direction. Shea butter is one example. For acne-focused cleansing, charcoal can be considered as a possible addition in broader soap variations.
For babies, I prefer the mildness of olive oil rather than designing for maximum cleansing.
The same principle applies whenever very high cleansing is unnecessary: choose the character of the soap for the job rather than simply choosing the oil that creates the most foam.
Can Liquid Castile Soap Be Used as Shampoo?
It can be used on hair, but this is one application where I give a clear qualification.
The liquid soaps demonstrated in the workshop are alkaline, and their pH can feel high for hair.
The issue is less about whether the soap can physically clean the hair and more about how the hair feels afterwards. On longer or rougher hair, it may not feel smooth or conditioning.
Small children or people who personally like the result may still choose to use it, but I would not assume that a Castile-soap hair wash will feel like a conventional shampoo.
I also caution against trying to force the pH down simply to make the product resemble a shampoo. Lowering the pH can cause the soap system to split rather than remain as a stable liquid soap.

Castile Soap for Household Cleaning
For household cleansing, coconut-oil Castile soap is the workhorse.
Its combination of high cleansing and abundant lather makes it particularly useful for laundry, dishes, floors, glass and other surfaces where more degreasing is useful.
There is an interesting exception in how we think about foam.
More lather is not always desirable.
A floor cleaner, for example, should not create excessive foam because a heavily foaming floor can become inconvenient and potentially slippery. The goal is effective cleansing, not the maximum visible bubbles possible.
Another interesting practical point is that a coconut-oil soap base can become quite firm in its concentrated form, even though the diluted liquid can be very thin. Texture at the concentrated stage therefore does not tell you what the final liquid cleanser will look like.
Should Liquid Castile Soap Be Clear?
Transparency is one of the recurring visual characteristics of liquid Castile soap. These soaps can form clear liquids, although bubbles and foam can temporarily make a freshly handled product look cloudy or less transparent.
Allowing it to rest can improve the appearance as the foam settles.
Essential oils can also make an otherwise clear soap look somewhat turbid.
That does not mean a homemade Castile soap should be expected to have the pearly appearance of many commercial washes. Those conventional liquid cleansers belong to a different type of product system.
Market washes made from surfactants are not the same as an oil-and-potassium-hydroxide Castile soap. I would therefore judge a Castile soap by the characteristics of Castile soap rather than by whether it visually imitates a commercial surfactant wash.

Common Mistakes and Practical Observations
A few observations are especially useful when working with or evaluating liquid Castile soap.
Don’t judge cleansing power by thickness. A very thin coconut-oil soap can lather vigorously, while a thicker olive-oil soap can be milder.
Don’t assume every decorative powder belongs in a liquid soap. If a powder does not actually dissolve, it can settle. Mica is one example that can settle rather than behave like a soluble liquid colour. Scrub particles such as walnut or orange scrub can also settle to the bottom.
Don’t assume foam created during mixing means the soap has failed. Mechanical blending can introduce a great deal of foam. Given time to rest, those bubbles can settle and the soap can become clearer.
Don’t assume the concentrated soap paste is the most convenient format for washing. It is highly concentrated and sticky, so getting a comfortable lather directly from the paste can require more rubbing and water. A finished liquid format is generally more convenient for ordinary use.
Don’t assume fragrance is necessary. The underlying soap has its own mild soapy smell. In applications such as pet wash, I specifically favor a fragrance-free approach rather than adding essential oils or fragrance oils.
Pets, Babies and Other Sensitive Uses
For a pet wash, stronger cleansing can be useful because dogs and cats have hair and are not bathed every day. Coconut oil is therefore one useful soap base for this purpose.
At the same time, I recommend avoiding essential oils and fragrance oils in pet products because dogs and cats can become irritated by them.
For babies, the thinking is almost the opposite. Babies do not need high cleansing, so olive oil is the milder choice. A highly diluted cleanser may also be acceptable where strong lather is not the priority.
These examples illustrate the broader rule:
Choose cleansing strength according to the actual cleaning need.
A pet, a baby, a greasy utensil and a kitchen floor are not simply four places to use the same cleanser in exactly the same way.

Storage, Water and Preservation
There is an important distinction between concentrated soap base and a product that has been diluted with water.
Once water is introduced, preservation and storage become a different concern.
For personal home use, small amounts can be made for relatively quick use without treating them as long-shelf-life commercial products.
Anything intended for sale or extended storage is different because the user may keep and handle the product for much longer.
The practical warning is that contamination is not always immediately visible. Mold or bacterial growth may become obvious only later. A product containing water should therefore not be judged simply by the fact that it still looks normal today.

Common Questions About Liquid Castile Soap
Can I use concentrated Castile soap paste directly?
It can be used, but it is sticky and concentrated, so it is less convenient. It takes more rubbing and water to produce a comfortable lather.
Why does my liquid soap look cloudy after blending?
Blending introduces a lot of foam. The bubbles may take time to settle, after which the soap can look clearer.
Can I use dry colour powders?
Only if the powder genuinely dissolves. If it settles after standing, it is not behaving as a soluble colour for this kind of liquid product.
Will glycerin make the soap lather more?
Not necessarily. Glycerin contributes moisturizing feel and thickness, but greater dilution can reduce lather. The balance depends on the sensory result you want.
Do I need a different soap for every skin type?
Not in the way I teach basic cleansing. The soaps are primarily cleansers. For very dry skin, a butter-containing direction can be considered; for acne-focused variations, charcoal is another possibility discussed in the workshop.
Why not use the strongest-cleansing oil for everything?
Because maximum cleansing is not required everywhere. Coconut oil is valuable for heavy cleansing, while olive oil is preferred when mildness is more important.
The Most Useful Way to Think About Liquid Castile Soap
Liquid Castile soap becomes much easier to understand when you stop thinking of it as one recipe and start thinking of it as a family of oil-based soaps.
The oil determines much of the personality: one oil may give more lather, another more thickness, another a milder feel, and combinations can balance those properties.
That also explains why appearance can be misleading:
Thin does not mean weak. Thick does not mean powerful. Lots of bubbles do not automatically make a product more appropriate for skin. And very high cleansing is not automatically an advantage.
The practical starting point is the job the cleanser has to do.
For skin, think about mildness and feel. For babies, avoid unnecessary cleansing strength. For household cleaning, prioritize cleansing performance. For hair, pay attention to how the alkaline soap actually feels rather than assuming every liquid cleanser behaves like shampoo.
