How Should Essential Oils Be Stored to Protect Their Aroma and Quality?

Essential oils stored in dark glass bottles away from light

Pure essential oils and concentrated essential-oil blends should be protected from unnecessary exposure to light and air.

The storage guidance discussed in the workshop is simple:

keep concentrated essential oils in dark glass containers, store them in a cool, dark place, and avoid leaving the bottles open unnecessarily.

Why Dark Glass?

Essential oils are concentrated aromatic materials.

The workshop recommends dark glass for concentrated oils because the container helps protect them from prolonged light exposure.

This is why pure essential oils are commonly treated differently from an ordinary finished cosmetic.

Why Should the Bottle Be Closed Quickly?

Whenever an essential-oil bottle is left open, its aroma begins escaping into the surrounding air.

If you can strongly smell the essential oil from across the room while the bottle is sitting open, some of that aromatic material is no longer inside the bottle.

So while the smell may be pleasant, leaving the container open unnecessarily is not useful.

Open the bottle when required and close it again once you are finished.

Should Essential Oils Be Kept in a Bright Bathroom?

The storage approach I prefer is a cool, dark location rather than somewhere exposed continuously to light.

The objective is simply to reduce unnecessary environmental exposure while the oil is being stored.

Does Every Aromatherapy Product Need Dark Glass?

No.

There is an important distinction between:

pure or concentrated essential oil, and

a finished cosmetic containing a much smaller amount of essential oil.

A finished cream, lotion, shampoo or another prepared cosmetic may have different packaging possibilities because it is no longer simply a bottle of concentrated essential oil.

This is why packaging decisions should be based on what is actually inside the container.

What About Aromatherapy Blends?

A concentrated blend made primarily from essential oils should be treated with the same storage mindset as the individual concentrated oils.

Protect it from light, avoid leaving it exposed to air and store it appropriately.

Once that blend has been incorporated into a finished cosmetic base, the packaging decision belongs to the finished product rather than to the essential oil alone.

A Simple Storage Habit

You do not need to make essential-oil storage complicated.

Remember three points:

Dark container.

Cool, dark storage area.

Keep the bottle closed when you are not using it.

Essential oils are purchased for their concentrated aromatic character. Good storage means avoiding unnecessary exposure that allows that character to escape or deteriorate.

The strongest practical sign is also the easiest to notice: if the essential oil is strongly perfuming the room because its bottle has been left open, that aroma is leaving the bottle instead of staying where you need it.
