After Shave Lotion

AFTER SHAVE LOTION

After shave is generally used for a refreshing feel after a shave. Most important task of an after shave is to shrink and close pores after the shave. Also if there is any cut, the aftershave helps to clot blood and disinfect the wound.  

Formula for after shave lotion  

Witch Hazel or any floral or herbal extract  15%

Ethyl Alcohol(Ethanol) 15%

Alum 0.5%(astringent and help blood clotting)

Menthol 0.1%

Boric acid 1% (antiseptic)

Glycerin 5% Water 62.4%

Liquid blue color 1 drop (optional)

Fragrance or essential oil 1%  

 

Ingredient Information

Witch Hazel: It is used for its antiseptic properties. Due to its excellent astringent properties, it helps to shrink pores and disinfect the skin.

Ethyl Alcohol: It helps to shrink and close open pores. It is also an excellent disinfectant and antiseptic. It gives a cooling feel to the skin.

Alum: Alum also has astringent properties but most importantly it help to clot blood in case of any cuts while shaving.

Boric acid: Boric acid is a great antiseptic that will take care of any wond healing it really fast

Glycerin: It is an excellent moisturizer, it helps to prevent the drying effect of alcohol and keep the skin hydrated

Menthol: It crreates a mild tingling and a great cooling effect on skin that is very refreshing

Procedure:

1. Mix menthol in ethyl alcohol until dissolved completely and keep it covered separately (to prevent alcohol evaporation).
2. In another container take the distilled water and add alum powder and mix well until dissolved completely.
3. Add borax powder and mix well until completely dissolved.
4. Add witch hazel or floral/herbal extract to the second mixture  and glycerin and mix well.
5. Now add the first mixture of ethyl alcohol and menthol to the above mixture
6. Finally add color and fragrance and it is ready to use.
7. Fill in spray bottles or any bottle of your choice.

NOTES

*Fragrance or essential oils that can be used in aftershave is sage, peppermint, eucalyptus, sandalwood, cedarwood, cool waters, cool blue, old spice  or any masculine fragrance

* This formulation does not need preservative as the ethyl alcohol acts as a preservative in this case

*You can skip witch hazel and replace with distilled water of you do not have witch hazel

* If you want to make an alcohol free after shave , you can replace the ethyl alcohol with distilled water or any floral water or hydrosols and mix the menthol in glycerin to dissolve it as menthol does not dissolve in water
