Sometimes—but a body wash is a rinse-off product, and that should influence how you choose expensive skincare ingredients.
An ingredient that makes excellent sense in a serum or cream does not automatically make equal sense in something that stays on the skin only briefly before being rinsed away.
Why Does Contact Time Matter?
A serum is designed to stay on the skin.
A body wash is not.
You apply it, cleanse and rinse.
That is why I think carefully before adding expensive actives simply because they are fashionable.
What About Hyaluronic Acid?
Hyaluronic acid was discussed specifically during the workshop.
I do not consider it essential in a body wash.
My preference is to use it in a leave-on product where it remains on the skin for longer rather than spending heavily on it for label appeal in a rinse-off product.
What About Niacinamide?
Niacinamide was treated differently.
It was discussed as a more practical body-wash active and was used in the skin-brightening concept.
I also consider it more reasonable from a cost perspective than some of the more expensive brightening ingredients.
What About Alpha Arbutin?
Alpha arbutin was also discussed for brightening.
However, it is comparatively expensive.
If I were developing my own range, I would think carefully about whether it makes more sense to put an expensive active into a body wash or into a serum or cream where it remains on the skin for much longer.
More Is Not Automatically Better
One of my favourite analogies from the workshop is food.
If your body needs one normal meal, eating many plates does not automatically make the meal more useful.
The same idea was explained with a sponge.
A sponge can absorb a certain amount of water. Pouring an entire bucket over it does not mean it will continue absorbing everything.
The lesson is not that actives have no place in body wash.
It is that using more simply for the sake of a larger claim is not always sensible.
The Practical Takeaway
When choosing actives for a body wash, think about the way the product is actually used.
Do not build the formulation around the most impressive ingredient list.
Build it around ingredients that make sense in a product that is rinsed away
