SPF stands for Sun Protection Factor, but the most useful way to understand it is not as a promise that one application will protect you indefinitely. The workshop treats SPF as one part of real-world sun protection: time outdoors, sweating, water exposure, rubbing and reapplication all affect how sunscreen is actually used.
SPF is not the same as duration
A common misunderstanding is to see a high SPF number and assume that the product can be applied once and forgotten for the rest of the day. That is not how I think about sunscreen use. A product on the skin does not remain unchanged through many hours of heat, sweat, movement or water.
Long-distance running is a useful example. Before a long event, sunscreen may be applied carefully in the morning, but the runner can remain outdoors until afternoon or evening. If the sunscreen is not reapplied, tanning or burning can still occur. The practical lesson is that a high SPF number does not remove the need to think about how long you are exposed and what is happening to the product on your skin.
Why the biggest SPF number is not automatically the best choice
The workshop focuses on practical sunscreen products around commonly used SPF levels and cautions against making a product unnecessarily heavy simply to chase a very high claimed number. Protection matters, but so do texture, comfort and whether the user will actually wear the product.
A sunscreen that feels too heavy or unpleasant may be harder to use consistently. That is why SPF should be considered together with the product format and the situation in which it will be worn.
What should you take from an SPF label?
Treat SPF as an important protection indicator, not as a timer and not as a guarantee of all-day protection. If you will be outdoors for a long period, especially while sweating or swimming, think about reapplication and physical coverage as well. The most useful sunscreen is one that provides the protection you need in a format you can realistically use.
